How to Price Painting to Doors?

The most accurate way of costing any commercial painting project is to measure each item of decoration works and apply the appropriate (m2) 'all-in' painting rate.

Doors are measured in (m2).   You should measure the door 'flat', both sides (if you are painting both sides of the door).  You then multiply your measure for one door by the total number of doors of this size and type.

So, if you have 25nr. flush doors (838mm x 2040mm) and you are painting both sides, you will have a total measure of:

2 x (25 x 0.838 x 2.04) = 85.48m2.

To find the cost of painting these doors, you then multiply this measure by the flush door (m2) rate in Quick Paint Rate.

Note:  When costing painting to doors, you DO NOT need to measure the door edges separately.  You will notice in Quick Paint Rate that there is a rate for painting to door edges, but this is only to be used if the doors are ‘factory finished’ and you are being asked for a cost to coat the doors edges after they have been installed.  If this is the case, door edges are measured by their length (Lm), so a typical single door will give a quantity of 4Lm (door edges)

Note:  Doors may be flush, panel or glazed (of various pane sizes) and the time it takes to paint each type of door varies (E.g. It is much quick to paint a flush door than a 'Georgian' panes glazed door).  Consequently, you will need to keep your measures for each different door type separate as you will need to apply different 'all-in' painting rates when costing.

Note:  You can group together your measures for ALL doors of the same type.

Happy Estimating,
